We were thrilled to be invited to drop into the offices of the West Shropshire Talking Newspaper recently to find out more about them and record a news snippet of our own!

The West Shropshire Talking Newspaper is a weekly service that delivers news to registered subscribers in an innovative and accessible approach, bringing local news to anyone who cannot read printed newspapers.

A Multifaceted Listening Experience

Since 1967, the West Shropshire Talking Newspaper has provided its subscribers with various avenues to stay informed. Weekly USB recordings are sent out to registered subscribers, offering an easy plug-and-play option for those who prefer a physical format. In addition, the service is available on multiple platforms, including their website, Talking Newspaper app, Podcasts, and even Smart Speakers. Additionally, there’s a dial-in service as well!

The Power of Teamwork

Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of over 60 individuals works across various areas to deliver this experience. From the technical team who piece it all together to the editors, presenters and readers who breathe life into the news, and the membership and despatch teams who ensure subscribers receive their copies – it’s a collaborative effort, and their passion shines through.

With 11 trustees overseeing the operations, the West Shropshire Talking Newspaper is actively looking for volunteers to join their vibrant community. So, if you have a passion for storytelling, technology, or simply want to make a difference, don’t hesitate to lend a hand and get in touch with their team. They are especially keen to recruit another visually impaired trustee, as one has recently retired from their Board.

Whilst visiting the recording studio, Sight Loss Shropshire’s Swan and Mel had the opportunity to record a news snippet about our upcoming open day, VisionZone 2023 and the Living Well with Sight Loss courses; we’re hoping to submit regular news from the charity on an ongoing basis too.

You can listen to the extract here.

We would like to thank Steve Bristow and the team at the West Shropshire Talking Newspaper for giving us the chance to be part of this great news publication.

Happy listening!
